Wicked Decent Winter Call in...
We've been hankerin for another listener participation show ever since the last one (although we've worked out some sound problems from last time so the quality will be better).
We're scheduling another Wicked Decent Listener show via Skype on Monday, December 29th at 8:00PM Eastern Standard Time. If you'd like to join us, all you have to do is...
1. Add "Wicked Decent Learning" as a contact on Skype (don't have Skype, it's free and easy to install on Mac or PC).
2. Log on to Skype between 7:30 PM EST and 8:00 PM on December 29th. Make sure you have a working microphone and that you know how to mute yourself (this will cut down on the noise interference). We'll come up with a topic and if you want to chime in, we'll come up with a batting order to make it simple and orderly (imagine that, order at WDL).
The only disclaimer here is that if you are joining us we have the right to use your voice on the show (kind of a no brainer, but important to say anyhow).
If you know you'll be joining us, send an email to wickeddecentlearning@gmail.com to let us know how many people to expect. Also, if you have a topic of interest to share, let us know there as well.
Hope to see you then, it's a great time to trade fruitcake recipes!

And the nominees are....
Recently I became more aware of the "Eddy" awards. These are awards given out for educational blogging each year and nominations are open to anyone who has their own blog. I had sort of heard of it in prior years but this year I had planned to nominate some of my favorite educational bloggers. Someone beat me to the punch. Richard Byrne of FreeTech4Teachers blog nominated Wicked Decent Learning for "Best Educational Use of Audio". Thank you Richard for your nomination. We never expected a positive superlative adjective to be thrown our way (sorry English teacher talk).
We'd like to nominate some people we think deserve some recognition in the field of educational blogging. If you'd like to nominate someone yourself, go to the nomination page here.
Best Resource Sharing Blog: FreeTech4Teachers blog by Richard Byrne (and not because he nominated us). All it takes is one look at this blog and you can instantly see the value in subscribing. Lots "use this on Monday" ideas and Richard consistently ties resources back to educational application with explanations, ideas and examples to current uses. This is the place to be..... go there..... now...... I mean it, why are you even reading further.
Best Educational Wiki: Learning in Maine Resources. This site was started by Jim Burke and has an incredible set of resources contributed by multiple people. It's up to date and he's very open to contributions. I doubt there is a topic, educational buzz word, or subject not respresented in some way. Don't just read, contribute and help grow this amazing resource.
Best Educational Use of a Social Networking Service: Ernie Easter's Maine Holocaust Ning. If you teach the Holocaust or want to see what you can do to join the "Never Again" commitment, this is the place to be. Ernie has 50+ members contributing resources, video, and reviews of content for this important cause.
Best Educational Use of Audio: Dave Solon's TwentyMinutes4Tech podcast. Dave is a PA tech education guy with a simple concept. You can influence and inspire educators about the power of technology in twenty minutes. He has landed some great interviews with not just people in the field of technology, but with people like Daniel Pink who have challenged the thinking of many teachers, schools and students. We chatted with Dave here back in Episode 24.
Thanks to these fine folks for all that they do.

Product Review for LiveScribe's Pulse SmartPen
Over the past month I've been given the opportunity to review a product from Live Scribe called the Pulse SmartPen. I found it to be an intuitive tool with easy functionality and potential for growth.
First off, the device. I was given the 2 GB pen, a 100 page paper notebook (with special pages), a pen case, USB cradle/charger, and ear bud headphones. This setup would currently retail for $199.00 and has the ability to record up to 200 hours of audio (a 1GB model is available for $149.00). This is all you need to get started and installation and setup was simple.
What this device allows you to do seems too simple to get excited about, but the simplicity of the technology is the key to it's adaptability and success. This pen lets you record your writings and audio from the time you were writing, into this pen. You might be thinking, “how is this different from a regular voice recorder?” Well, let me explain. Let's say you are taking lecture notes and recording your teacher while writing with a regular notebook and digital recorder. When you go to review your written notes, you have the hassle of rewinding and fast-forwarding your recording to find the place the teacher was speaking about the information you wrote down. But this is where the Pulse SmartPen is different. Tap the pen on the words that you were writing and it will jump directly to the same time in the audio and play it back for you. That's what makes the SmartPen smart. Sure you can use the same rewind, fast-forward feature with SmartPen, but it also lets you jump to the exact point that you wrote something and plays back the audio. You can even leave bookmarks in your notes to jump back to important points later.
But that's not all the SmartPen is good at. You can record your “sessions” of note taking and download them to your computer. It creates a movie file that plays your audio back and shows, in real-time, your writings being drawn on the screen. You can even post that file on the web as part of livescribe's web page for others to view by just visiting the provided URL. Your viewers can even point the mouse at words and have the audio skip to that point on the movie file, just like you can on the SmartPen notebook.
Like I said, it's the simplicity of the SmartPen that makes it a versatile, powerful tool for learning and teaching. I believe the SmartPen could be used by teachers in many ways to reach their students. For example, a math teacher could use the pen to recorder his/her thought process while solving a multi-step math problem, and post it online for students to review and reference at any time. An English teacher could do the same to show an editing process for composition. An art teacher could use the same technology to explain his/her technique for drawing, just like a music teacher could use it to explain music notation. The possibilities for teachers are vast.
For student use, besides the obvious note taking during a lecture, there are some other possibilities that intrigue me. The SmartPen could be used in student work as a tool for reflecting. Why not have a student talk about their thought process while writing or drawing. What an insight that could give a teacher. Also, listening to a lecture and seeing what the student writes down is a great way to teach the techniques for effective note taking. The possibilities for students with special needs are endless, but it's clear that the SmartPen is a tool that can fundamentally change note taking and how it is taught.
There are other features of the SmartPen not mentioned here, a calculator, a simple piano feature, even a basic language translator, but the best way to understand the power of this tool is to try it yourself. Soon LiveScribe will be offering the ability to print your own paper for free and the ability to run the software natively in a Mac OS X environment. There are many upcoming developments for the SmartPen, most of which will be offered as free upgrades. I would encourage any school to purchase a SmartPen, it is clear the educational benefits may only be limited by your imagination.

Recording on a Saturday Night Post-Grad Night
Dan here:
We're both fresh off graduation ceremonies and arriving back in the Geek Lair for some good ol' fashioned podcasting. Tonight, we'll be talking about the lines between school and community and when schools should be holding students accountable for behavior beyond the walls. (And you might actually hear us throw down a little over this one, folks!) Jeff will be talkin' tech and some great sites for summer reading. I'll be talking about a book I'm currently reading, but gotta talk about because I'm sucked right in. And in media, I'll speak of the virtues of Most Dangerous Catch and Ice Road Truckers.
Good times should abound!

Delayed Show Week
Jeff here:
So the end of the year is hitting Dan and I hard. We have not had time to get together to record and probably won't have a show out until Thursday or Friday this week. Considering both of us are sleep deprived, living off of caffeine and cheezits, it's a wonder we're even alive this week.
This would be a good oppurtunity for people to have input for the next episode. The topic, working with parents. What suggestions or tips do you have for parent involvement? Do you have a parent meeting horror story to share?
Let us know by blog comment here or email wickeddecentlearning@gmail.com

So We're a Little Late...
Dan here:
Sorry, folks. We get a tardy this week. Mom's Day plans and travelin' made it pretty much impossible to record this weekend. (And since our wives -- and mothers of our kids -- are pretty darn tolerant of our evenings recording in the lair, we aren't really gonna complain. Plus, I was in Boston. Hoo-rah!)
We're about to start recording a show all about recognizing student achievement and we'll also yap about online video editing tools, more comics (shock! awe!), and old school punk rawk getting new school props.
It'll be up in the morning. Sling us a line tonight as we record and it might make it on the air!

When Is Too Late to Record, Too Late to Record?
It's 11 p.m. We just hit the record button.
Heck yes! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout! Bringin' it hardcore education podcast style to the masses!
Jeff's got SATs in the morning. Pshaw! That ain't nuthin'!
Dan's got a sick kid. Pshaw! What's a 102 degree fever in the face of our podcasting might?
Yeah, we're in a mood. And we're talkin' standardized testing. It should be a gooder.

Recording .. What Better Way to Spend a Saturday Night?
The Celts are on.. the Sox are probably gonna lose because the D-Rays (I refuse to call them just plain 'Rays') seem to have their number lately... and the draft consumed my brain this afternoon...
What better time to record the next episode?
We're yappin' 'bout student motivation tonight and the show should be up and available sometime on Sunday.
We'll be back on our regular schedule through the rest of the school year as best as we can tell.

Wednesday Night Recording!
Dan here:
It's Wednesday night and due to Dan's wacky weekend (New York ComicCon, baby!) we had to record earlier in the week.
And we have to keep it tight because we's gotta be up in da mornin'.
Let's see how THAT goes.

Can Ya Help a Podcast Out?
Dan here:
In our continued efforts to expand the Wicked Decent Learning community, we are actively pursuing ways to make the show more visible.
One of the easiest ways to do this is through iTunes. If people could find five, ten minutes to go to our iTunes listing and write a short review, oh boy, that would be swell. You don't have to feel obligated to download it there -- there are lots of ways to listen to WDL and we encourage them all -- but the more activity we have on that account, the more likely a casual browser will come across our fair ship and say, 'That looks seaworthy! I shall take it for a spin!'
Or something like that.
Thanks!

Episode 15: The Log and the Links
Dan here:
It took me a couple of days due entirely to being overextended (moving my sister-in-law and brother-in-law into their new house -- which is awesome, and judging a battle of the band -- which was awesome but not as awesome as seeing the potential for the greatest rec room the world has ever known) and overtired.
But here we are. I've got the list of links. I've also got the log, but can't seem to find a way to post it here for downloading. Hrmmm....
Here are the links in the order in which they appeared during the show. If I were a better host, I'd add annotate them, but I'm kinda lame like that.

I'll figure out a better way to get the chat log out there. In the meantime, if you want a copy, just sling us an e-mail and it will be on its way in a hurry.

We Are in the Middle of the Live Show Right Now
Dan here:
We're recording right now with a whole mess of cool people chatting with us. Jeff is moderating the whole shebang and I'm keeping uncharacteristically quiet.
I'll be posting a haphazard collection of links from the chat on here. And we'll try to repost with a prettier looking thing later this weekend.
Great to hear from everyone and thanks so much for supporting the show.

How to Join Our LIVE podcast
Jeff Here:
This Friday, April 11th, 2008 at 8:00 PM EST Dan and I are going to try our first LIVE podcast episode and we'd like you to join us.
Here's the skinny. We are looking for people to share "Wicked Decent" ideas and happenings in your school or classroom. What are you excited about that you think other listeners should know about. Pat yourself on the back, you know you deserve it! Pay tribute to that colleague who is so creative and energetic you just wanna sing their praises from the rooftops (please use proper safety equipment).
So now you know what, here's the "how".
Option 1: Skype
The recommended way for you to interact with us is through Skype. This is a free program that you download onto a Mac or PC and lets you communicate with other Skype users through video, audio, or chat. If you'd like to audio chat with us, you'll need a mic and if you'd like to video chat you'll need a webcam (BTW we don't plan on showing our ugly mugs on camera, but we welcome you to). Click on the Skype link here to download. Once the program is installed, you can add us as a contact (WickedDecentLearning). If you are using a microphone or webcam you can use the Skype Test Call feature to check to see if it works properly. Then simply log on around 8:00 PM EST on Friday, April 11th for the show. We will call you so that everyone is in the same conference call. That's it. No charge, no worries. This lets you listen to the show live AND be a part of the show in real time. Just keep in mind, we will be recording for rebroadcast so what you say will be sent into the reaches of the universe.
Option 2: Online Text Chat
If you can't install anything on your machine or would prefer to simply participate by text chat, we will create a chat room on ChatMaker.net. I've made the room already but no one will probably be there until the show starts. Here's the link to the room. When you get in you can click on the default user name (Guest###) and change it to your preferred name.
Option 3: You Just Can't Make it Live
So you copped out on us? Friday night TV too important for you to sign up for Tivo just this one time to help us out? Well, no hard feelings. You can always send us an email or comment before Friday's show. wickeddecentlearning@gmail.com or comment on this blog post.
Looking forward to seeing you there. If you'd like to send us an email or Skype us before hand, that would give us an idea of how many people are joining us.
